| Green Grants Neighborhood Planting Program
Since the early 1990s, the District of Columbia has received both technical and financial assistance from the USDA Forest Service to conduct urban and community forestry-related activities. Federal financial assistance may be used by the District of Columbia to fund, through competitive matching grants, local urban and community forestry activities. These grants may be awarded to local units of government, approved organizations that meet the requirements of section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, or other local community tree volunteer groups.
The DC Green Grants Program is a partnership between the District Department of Transportation, Urban Forestry Administration (UFA), and the USDA Forest Service. The grant program channels federal financial assistance directly to local organizations. These grant dollars shall be used to improve the structure and function of the District's urban forests. Project accomplishment for the DC Green Grants Program will be shared with the USDA Forest Service and other state/territory urban forestry programs to highlight the importance of community forestry in the United States.
The UFA within the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is the local government entity responsible for managing of the District's street trees. UFA works in close cooperation with its federal partner, the USDA Forest Service Northeastern Area, to raise the level of understanding and awareness regarding urban and community forestry within the District of Columbia. The DC Green Grants program supports local programs and projects to give hands-on experience to DC residents so they may learn more about, learn to appreciate, and take ownership of the trees in their urban environment.
